Fantasy Flight Games and Asmodee announced the formation of Fantasy Flight Interactive today. The new studio will work to adapt Fantasy Flight’s board and card game brands to the digital realm.

Fantasy Flight makes tabletop games based on hot properties like Star Wars, The Lord of the Rings, and Game of Thrones. Creating digital versions could expose the products to a larger audience. Popular board games like Settlers of Catan have been making similar transitions. Asmodee has already worked on digital versions of tabletop hits like Ticket to Ride and Mysterium.

Fantasy Flight also works on card-based and other collectible games, like Star Wars: Destiny. Digital card games like Hearthstone have been successful partially because they can monetize digital card pack sales. Fantasy Flight could pursue a similar path for such games.

“We didn’t create a new company just to translate board games into digital games,” said Christian T. Petersen, founder of Fantasy Flight Games and chief executive officer of Asmodee North America, in a press release sent to GamesBeat. “We’re focused on the bigger picture of the experiences our fans can have on new platforms, and this will take our brands in new directions.”

Tapletop games are popular, but they can be complicated. Digital versions make it easier to keep track of the rules, since the game can do a lot of the work for you.

Tim Gerritsen is heading the new studio. He has more than 25 years of experience in gaming, working as studio director of BioShock Infinite developer Irrational Games and chief executive officer of Prey (2006) maker Human Head Studios.
