Days prior to his sudden firing, former FBI Director James Comey had requested additional funding and resources from the Department of Justice for the bureau’s ongoing investigation into alleged collusion between Russian intelligence and associates of President Donald Trump, the New York Times reported on Wednedsay.

After Comey’s firing, White House openly pushes for conclusion of FBI’s Russia investigation

In a letter delivered late in the day on Tuesday, Trump informed Comey that he was fired, and offered up half-baked and contradictory reasoning for his firing. Members of Congress—including several Republicans—have accused the administration of interfering with the FBI’s ongoing investigation into Russia.

The revelation that Comey was seeking additional resources just days before his unexpected firing will likely fuel such speculation. It also casts new light on some of Trump’s recent comments about the FBI’s investigation, which he has continued to portray as a witch hunt.

On Wednesday, shortly after a closed-door meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in the Oval Office, Trump responded to questions about why Comey was fired by simply stating that he “was not doing a good job.”
