Google Cloud instances can now use 96 vCPUs and 624GB of memory

Google Cloud customers now have access to much more powerful compute instances, the company announced today. It’s possible for users to rent virtual machines with up to 96 virtual CPUs and 624GB of RAM.

They’re based on Intel’s Skylake Xeon Scalable processors, and customers can purchase three prebuilt virtual machine shapes with 96 processors and varying amounts of memory. In addition, users can adjust the amount of memory available using Google’s custom machine types feature.

The top-end instance, with 624GB of RAM, has been certified for use with SAP’s HANA database software for scale-up deployments, and customers can also use up to 16 large instances for scale-out data warehouses running BW4/HANA.

The new instances are part of the ongoing power wars between different cloud providers. Microsoft, Amazon, Google, Oracle, IBM, and others are all competing to provide customers with beefy cloud instances for mission-critical and performance-intensive workloads like databases.

Google has been working hard to attract enterprise users, and supporting SAP HANA is a key workload for many enterprises contemplating a cloud migration. These new instances may help the company pick up key new customers, as well as drive more revenue, since all those processors don’t come cheap.

The “standard” 96 vCPU instance will cost almost $5 per hour, while the high-memory model costs more than $6 per hour. Companies running those machines on a monthly basis will be looking at a bill for over $2,500 per instance.

Right now, the high-powered instances are available in beta through Google’s Central US, West US, West Europe, and East Asia cloud regions.
