Is There a Tiny Chance Charlie Strong Saves His Job with a Win Over TCU?

Charlie Strong is probably toast at Texas. You can’t lose to Kansas and expect to keep your job. That had to be the final nail in the coffin. Right?

Maybe … not. Chip Brown of Scout, who has been all over the Texas coaching situations over the last five years, writes that maybe Strong could keep his job with a win over TCU this weekend.

While members of the big-money donor group at Texas have made their interest known to Herman, sources said, Fenves and Perrin have refused to engage directly in any backdoor negotiating until their evaluation of Strong is complete – after Friday’s season finale vs TCU.

If Texas wins, the Longhorns would be bowl eligible at 6-6 with a chance for a roster that returns 37 of its 44 in the two-deep next season to improve with 15 bowl practices.

Sources said Strong made an impressive case for himself at his weekly press conference Monday and that he may need a fourth season to turn things around the way Colorado coach Mike McIntyre, who also needed to restock the roster, needed four seasons.

Here’s hoping Texas shows up and wins one for Strong. I know he hasn’t improved the way he should have in Year 3 – then again, he has a true freshman QB – but I think you’ve gotta give him a 4th year. Yes, even despite the Kansas loss.

It’s difficult to defend Strong as a game coach, and I expect him to be fired. Tom Herman will come in to a roster that Strong stacked with talent, and they’ll go 10-2 next year and everyone will ask, “what would Charlie Strong have done with this roster?” We’ll never know.
