Microsoft releases new Windows 10 preview with 5 bug fixes ahead of Fall Creators Update

Microsoft today released a new Windows 10 preview for PCs with just five bug fixes. The company is simultaneously finalizing the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update, which is expected to arrive on October 17, and developing the update that will come after it.

Windows 10 is a service, meaning it was built in a very different way from its predecessors so it can be regularly updated with not just fixes, but new features, too. Microsoft has released many such updates, including three major ones: November Update, Anniversary Update, and Creators Update.

Because Microsoft is now focusing on stability for the Fall Creators Update, these builds tend not to include new features. Indeed, this one only has five fixes:

  • Fixed an issue some Insiders were experiencing where after upgrading to recent flights their optical drive wouldn’t be listed under This PC.
  • Fixed an issue where Microsoft Edge might crash when scrolling embedded PDFs.
  • Fixed an issue resulting in some Insiders seeing 0x80070005 when trying to upgrade to the last few flights.
  • Fixed an issue where using the Automatic File Download notification to block an app from downloading files wasn’t working for UWP apps.
  • Fixed an issue resulting in Windows Defender potentially downloading files selected to be online-only after using the file picker dialog and viewing their thumbnails.

Today’s update bumps the Windows 10 build number for PCs from 16296 (made available to testers on September 22) to build 16299. Microsoft no longer tracks or lists known issues, so install at your own risk.
