Microsoft releases second Windows 10 preview in 2 days ahead of Fall Creators Update

Just 30 hours after the last build, Microsoft today released a new Windows 10 preview for PCs. The company is simultaneously finalizing the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update, which is expected to arrive on October 17, and developing the update that will come after it.

Windows 10 is a service, meaning it was built in a very different way from its predecessors so it can be regularly updated with not just fixes, but new features, too. Microsoft has released many such updates, including three major ones: November Update, Anniversary Update, and Creators Update.

Because Microsoft is now focusing on stability for the Fall Creators Update, these builds tend not to include new features. Indeed, this one only has five fixes:

  • This build has the fix for the bug that was causing some Surface Pro 3 devices to end up in a bad state where the Windows OS will not load and it appears to be stuck on a “spinning dots” screen. After installing this build, Surface Pro 3 devices should no longer get into this state.
  • Fixed an issue on Dutch builds where explorer could go into a crash loop if an app-requested downloads notification popped up from OneDrive.
  • Fixed an issue where expand.exe couldn’t expand CABs that contained Japanese characters in the file name.
  • Fixed a race condition that could result in window content being transparent (but showing the window frame) or stale after unlocking your desktop.
  • Fixed an issue resulting in some Insiders seeing error 0x800B010C when attempting to upgrade to the last few flights.

Today’s update bumps the Windows 10 build number for PCs from 16291 (made available to testers on September 19) to build 16294. Microsoft no longer tracks or lists known issues, so install at your own risk.

The PC Gaming channel is presented by Intel®‘s Game Dev program.
