During Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ opening statement Tuesday before the Senate Intelligence Committee, he addressed the concern that he had previously testified that he had no meetings with any Russians. Given that he subsequently acknowledged multiple meetings, he explained his answer by blaming Sen. Al Franken (D-MN).

“There is an assertion that I did not answer Senator Franken’s question honestly in my confirmation hearing,” he said. “Colleagues, that is false.”

Sessions complained that Franken’s question was “rambling” and that he was accurately responding when he said he had no contact in the context of being a surrogate for the Trump campaign.

Sessions position is odd, since one of his meetings with Sergey Kislyak occurred at the Republican National Convention. Sessions paid for his travel to the RNC with his campaign funds.

At the confirmation hearing, Franken asked about a new CNN report that Russians were in constant contact with the campaign. Franken asked Sessions what he would do if there was any evidence of such communications.

Sessions responded, “I have been called a surrogate at a time or two in that campaign, and I didn’t have communications with the Russians, and I’m unable to comment on it.”

Franken didn’t ask Sessions if he had communications with the Russians — as a surrogate or otherwise. Sessions volunteered that information.

Moreover, there was nothing “rambling” about Franken’s question, and Sessions didn’t indicate any confusion about what he was asking, aside from having not heard the reports. He claimed to have had no communications with any Russian officials, even though he had.
