Uber is losing its license in London because it’s not a ‘fit and proper’ operator

Uber has been dealt a massive blow as the ride-hailing giant has been refused a license renewal in London.

Transport for London (TfL), which regulates private car services such as Uber in the U.K. capital, has cited a number of reasons for the decision. The overarching reason given by TfL is that Uber is “not fit and proper” to hold a private hire operator license.

“TfL considers that Uber’s approach and conduct demonstrate a lack of corporate responsibility in relation to a number of issues which have potential public safety and security implications,” the regulator said. It then gave a number of specific reason, including the company’s approach to reporting crimes, how medical certificates are obtained for drivers, and how it carries out drivers’ Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks.
